Maps For Garmin Gps

Does it really cost like 50 + dollars to upgrade the maps gps Garmin, Magellan and Tom Tom GPS devices?
Because I read that buying or thats a gps for sale will most likely have old maps and is more than I pay $ 50 to update the map? What is that true for? the three major GPS manufacturers? Or what is happening
I do not know (because I do not belong to use all that much more). Yes Garmin and Magellan charge, but has something called tom tom "Map Share" which I assume to be free … but it updates based on community maps. I'm not sure if millions of do … yet. A pot? You better believe it.
